Schlieren Photography is a method of photographing changes in air density. Aeronautical engineers use it to study the sonic boom caused by fighter jets. This is not a digital representation of sound. These are real sound waves bending light.

Nikon will use Schlieren Photography to take photos of actual sound waves created by the crowd at the 2014 World Cup, memorializing decisive moments and sharing them across the world. Thousands of pictures will be taken at the World Cup, but only Nikon will capture the Roar.

The website will house an online gallery of the images and behind the scenes footage of our optical system built by aeronautical engineers.

Art prints will be available for purchase.

We will set up a Schlieren photo laboratory on-site where rowdy fans can share their team spirit. Our photo booth captures sound waves from fans cheering in short videos which will be shared through vine and embedded on the microsite in real time.
